The Hermitage Homes

Tucked away in Murrells Inlet is the exclusive gated community of The Hermitage. This waterfront community of only 14 homesites is a step back in time where live oaks drip Spanish Moss and the homes are constructed to look like the original home site built in 1848. Waterfront homesites have a view of the marsh and the ocean beyond.

The Hermitage is also home to one of South Carolina’s most famous ghost stories. Built by the rice planter, James Belin it was used as a summer home. James’ sister Alice frequented the home during her breaks from school in Charleston. Alice fell in love with a man her brother James thought was beneath her social status. While in school in Charleston, Alice became very ill with malaria and was brought back to Murrells Inlet. Her brother saw a ring tied with a bow around Alice’s neck and thought it was from her forbidden beau. James tore the ring off her neck and threw it into the creek. Absolutely devastated, Alice finally succumbed to her illness and despair. Today, Alice also known as “The Lady in White”, can be seen wandering through the original house and near All Saints Church in Pawleys Island.
